A South Ockendon woman has been handed £1200 in fines after pleading guilty to offences relating to the section 34 of the Environment Protection Act 1990.

Ashley Grunwell, 22 year old from Knowlton Cottages, admitted to duty of care offences after claiming that she paid somebody £30 to take away 10 bin bags of waste which were later fly-tipped.

The bin bags were found abandoned in an access road by the side of Ockendon Motor Spares in September 2015.

Cllr Rob Gledhill, Leader of the Council said: “I hope this is a strong warning to anybody who wants to save themselves a few quid and pays unscrupulous fraudsters who take your money and then dump the waste a few roads over.

“The responsibility is on you to check the company or individual has a valid waste carrier license before you pay anybody to take away your rubbish.

“The council spends a significant amount tax-payers money clearing fly-tips which could so easily be avoided. The money the council pays to clear up this waste is money stopped from being spent in better ways.

“I’ve personally used and would definitely recommend residents make use of the bulky waste collection service who will take away three large items for £30. The Linford amenity site is also a free service to residents where you can take your waste.

“There is no need to be using unscrupulous and unlicensed traders who offer discounted rates at your front door or on social media.”
