A traffic operation held in Corringham saw seven men arrested.
Officers from our Casualty Reduction Section and Safer Essex Roads partners were at Southend Road in Corringham on May 4 to help reduce those killed and seriously injured on our roads using a combination of engagement and enforcement.
70 drivers were dealt with for failing to wear a seatbelt whilst driving and a total of 153 drivers were found to be driving in excess of the speed limit.
19 drivers were found to be driving whilst using their mobile phone.
Five men, aged between 22 and 45 were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and handling stolen goods after a tracker activation. They are in custody assisting police with their enquiries.
During the operation, officers also arrested a 24-year-old man from Basildon on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and traffic offences and a 27-year-old man from Kent on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and possession of drugs. Both were released under investigation.
Four drivers were dealt with for careless driving and a rider was dealt with for careless riding.
Three drivers were found to be driving without valid insurance and each driver had their car seized under Section 165. A further two drivers were found to be driving without a valid license and two drivers were found to be driving without a valid MOT.
Four drivers were dealt with for having vehicle defects, including tyres below the legal limit.
Matt Hine, Operational Tasking Supervisor at the Casualty Reduction Unit, said: “Driving without wearing a seatbelt and driving in excess of the speed limit presents a risk not only to the driver and passengers, but to others around them and it’s really important that these offences remain an absolute priority for Essex Police and our partners within the Safer Essex Roads Partnership.”
