ON THURSDAY, Chadwell St Mary Labour Councillors Sara Muldowney and Daniel Chukwu joined Essex Police and council officers for a patrol of the ward to discuss the ongoing nuisance of illegal motorbike activity and the measures that could be taken to tackle the problem.
The team met at the Pyramid Centre on Orsett Heath, where Cllr Muldowney presented officers with a four page list of incidents logged by local residents during the year. She also gave an update about illegal activity on the Aluric Close estate and about riders driving dangerously along Riverview, Heath Road and other parts of the ward.
Cllr Muldowney said: “Time and again, local residents have told me about their concerns and frustrations with illegal motorbike activity. This is such a frequent nuisance on Orsett Heath that residents say that reporting every incident was taking over their lives and they have really had enough.”
“In December last year and March this year, I held public meetings where residents were able to raise their concerns about this nuisance on the Heath directly with the police. More recently, I contacted the Chief Inspector to raise the issues with motorbikes being ridden and burnt out on the Aluric Close green spaces.”
“This summer I made sure that Chadwell was one of 5 priority areas for Operation Caesar which ran over the weekends to tackle this nuisance and have encouraged direct reporting to the police via 101 or the new Live Chat function on the Essex Police website. The intelligence received led to the police and council officers seizing bikes and quad bikes from garages in Chadwell in July.”
“I am very pleased to hear that the police have extended this operation and have met with us today to decide on a further plan of action. As local councillors we were able to use our local knowledge and experience to make suggestions about what will work.”
“We hope that this team meeting will help to address this nuisance and that the target hardening measures we have suggested will be implemented by the council.”
