Statement from Essex Police
“We are issuing an updated appeal following a collision that left a pedestrian with life-changing injuries.
We were called to Victoria Road in Stanford-le-Hope following reports that a man in his 30s had been hit by a white or light-coloured hatchback car at around 1.30am on Monday, December 31. He remains in stable condition in hospital.
Following today’s enquiries, we are asking for several key witnesses to come forward.
It is believed that the victim was dropped off at Stanford-le-Hope train station at around 11.15pm on Sunday, December 30.
Whilst there, we believe he met a group of young men, aged in their late teens or early 20s, and befriended them. We think that they may have walked around the town together and ended up on Victoria Road in the early hours of December 31.
It is unclear if the men were there at the time of the collision, but we believe they will hold valuable information about our victim’s movements on Victoria Road, and we urge them to get in touch.
Our attempts to trace the car, which failed to stop at the scene, and its driver are ongoing.
Anyone with information, relevant CCTV, or dash cam footage is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101. The reference for this incident is 91 of 31/12.

ESSEX Police are appealing for information after a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian in Victoria Road, Stanford-le-Hope this morning, December 31.
The victim, a man aged in his 30s, is believed to have been lying in the road at around 1.30am when the incident occurred.
He has been taken to hospital in a stable condition, but his injuries are believed to be life-changing.
The car is thought to be a white or light-coloured hatchback and failed to stop at the scene.
An Essex Police spokesperson said: “Our officers are appealing for the driver of this vehicle to come forward and assist with our enquiries. Alternatively, if you have seen a car of this description with recent damage to the front of the bodywork, we would encourage you to call us.
“Road closures are currently in place on Victoria Road and drivers are advised to seek alternative routes where possible. Roads from Gentry Close to the railway station remain open.
“Our enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage of this area to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit through 101 quoting incident number 91 of 31/12.
