Pride flag flies high at Essex Police headquarters

THE Pride flag flew from Essex Police headquarters this weekend to celebrate the county’s annual Pride festival.

Our officers, volunteers and members of our LGBT+ Network attend the event, which is usually held in Central Park in Chelmsford, every summer.

This year, Essex Pride has moved online to ensure that the important celebration can continue during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chair of Essex Police’s LGBT+ Network, Sergeant Rebecca Shoebridge-Cave, helped to raise the flag at headquarters yesterday, Friday 19 June, alongside Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington.

Speaking of the changes to Pride, Sergeant Shoebridge-Cave said: “Pride certainly looks a bit different this year, but it’s all for the better. I know how important it is to the members of our Network to take some time and celebrate Pride alongside the rest of the LGBTQ+ community, so we’re really glad that it can still go ahead in a different format.”

Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington added: “I hope that everyone has an enjoyable digital Pride this year. I went along to Central Park last year, and had a lot of important conversations with people from our local LGBTQ+ communities.

“We know that crime from the LGBTQ+ community is still underreported, especially when it comes to hate crime or domestic violence. If you’re a victim of crime, we hope you can report it to us and be confident that we will treat your incident with the respect and gravity it deserves.

“We know that we’re not always your first port of call if you’re in trouble, and that’s okay. If you do want to contact us, you can report crime to us through our website or call 101. Please always call 999 in an emergency, and don’t forget you can use the silent 55 on a mobile if it’s not safe for you to speak.

“If we’re not your first port of call, you can go to Crimestoppers to report crime anonymously or speak to Victim Support. There are a lot of great charities available for support as well, who we work closely with, from Stop Hate UK to Outhouse East or Transpire.

“Finally, a huge thank you to my LGBTQ+ officers, staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to protect and serve the people of Essex. Happy Pride.”

Essex Police’s Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Vernal Scott, said: “Pride is a great chance to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community – whether it’s our staff and volunteers, your family and friends, or even just admiring the strength of love between people you don’t necessarily know.

“The more visible the representation, the more we can inspire people to be themselves, knowing that we’ll be there to welcome them and treat them without judgement, whether we’re meeting you in your Essex Police uniform or under the circumstances where you’re a victim of crime.

“Love is love, gender identity is yours to define, and I’m so proud that we celebrate it all, every day of the year, at Essex Police.”

Domestic abuse cases in Essex rise by 20% during lockdown

Domestic Violence

By Local Democracy Reporter
Steve Shaw

THE number of people arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse in Essex increased by 20 per cent in the first full month of lockdown compared to last year.

Essex Police arrested 504 people on suspicion of domestic abuse in April 2019 and 605 in April 2020.

The number of people charged also increased from 204 in April 2019 to 217 in April 2020.

There has been increased concern over how domestic violence victims may be at more risk due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The threat from perpetrators is being regarded as particularly acute during lockdown, when victims have limited freedom to escape any coercive and controlling behaviour at home.

Essex Police have underlined the number of domestic violence orders that have been issued since the beginning of the year.

Since the start of 2020, they have successfully applied for 150 orders through the courts and have prosecuted 23 people for breaching them – where they were either fined or sent to prison.

Among the most recent efforts against domestic abuse was the arrest of a 27-year-old man on suspicion of breaching an order after a woman reported that he turned up at her address in Basildon on Tuesday, June 23.

The hard work of the teams in securing these orders has not gone unnoticed with Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding, MP Jess Phillips, praising Essex Police in Parliament for proactively seeking these powers.

Chief Superintendent Andrew Mariner said: “This has been a team effort including the trainers, the officers detaining and dealing with the perpetrators, the legal team preparing everything for court and the courts themselves.

“Our work is helping to keep vulnerable people safe and is enabling them to go about in their communities knowing that those posing a risk to them have orders and restrictions placed on them.

“The kind comments made in Parliament this month is testament to our teams and our criminal justice partners and I hope this will give people confidence that we are safeguarding and helping victims and we are dealing with abusers looking to cause them harm – be it physical, emotional or both.”

Domestic Violence Protection Orders (DVPOs) can be issued to people if there has been insufficient evidence to charge suspects but police have concerns about the safety of the victims.

The notices can order the suspects to leave the premises where the incidents occurred, prevent them from entering the homes of the victims and stop them from making any further contact with them, as well as further provisions.

Between 19 May and 17 June, Essex Police secured 25 DVPOs against individuals, with the youngest being a 19-year-old from Basildon and the oldest being a 52-year-old man in South Ockendon.

Over that period they secured five orders in Basildon and Chelmsford, three orders in Clacton, two in Billericay and Harwich and orders in Great Leighs, South Ockendon, Tilbury, Harlow, Southend, Rayleigh, West Mersea and Stanford-le-Hope.

Essex Police remind people that dialling 55 after dialling 999 alerts police operators that you are in need of assistance but cannot talk.
