Diversity Trophy

A ceremony to honour the efforts of officers, staff and volunteers took place last night and saw 15 awards presented by Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh.
Almost 200 people attended the ceremony held at the Chelmsford City Racecourse. Nominees and their guests enjoyed the yearly event where trophies for bravery, dedication and charitable efforts are presented.

Officers, staff and teams had to meet certain criteria to win an award, which included:

• Delivering strong local policing, working to earn the trust of the public
• Delivering better value for money, efficiency and productivity
• Reducing the risk of harm to our communities
• Developing and valuing police officers and staff and enhancing professionalism.

There was one winner from Thurrock

Winner: Jasmine Collier.

Jasmine is the Thurrock Head Cadet and has been instrumental in assisting the Volunteer Police Cadet (VPC) leaders to establish the unit, which is now more than a year old.

She is admired and looked up to by the rest of the team and has shown maturity beyond her years.
Jasmine took the lead in creating messaging groups and co-ordinating events outside of her normal volunteering hours and, following an increase in knife crime within the borough, she led on the production of a knife crime and gang awareness video. This was so well produced that it has been requested by other agencies to use in their campaigns.

Jasmine balances her VPC duties with volunteering for other youth organisations. Her unit leaders have been exceptionally impressed by her leadership skills and hope that she will progress to take on an adult leader role.

Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh, said: “I’m really proud to be able to formally recognise the efforts of officers, staff and volunteers who have been nominated for these awards because of some of the outstanding things they have done while serving the public of Essex.

“Every day I hear stories about acts of bravery, amazing dedication and occasions when someone has gone above and beyond to help a vulnerable person and keep them safe.

“I am privileged to lead such a great group of men and women who together work tirelessly to make this county safe. The ceremony is held to recognise a small number of them who have been nominated by their colleagues and say thank you for their service.”

Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, said: “It was a great honour to attend the Essex Police Awards Ceremony. Every day Essex Police officers, staff and volunteers do amazing things to protect their communities. It is great to see the efforts of some of those people recognised tonight.”

Flint

A GANG, who targeted businesses in a burglary spree, have been jailed for a collective total of over 16 years.

Jamie Johnson, Robert Flint and Joshua Lloyd were linked to a series of burglaries through forensic examination work, CCTV and phone analysis.

In the first burglary, two stolen BMWs arrived at the Co-Op in The Sorrells, Stanford-le-Hope, in the early hours of January 21, 2016.

One reversed into a window to smash it and a tow rope was tied to a stand-alone cash machine inside the shop, before being towed out and loaded into car.

The machine was found dumped on a grass bank near the railway line in Benfleet on March 2. The £14,600 inside had been stolen and never recovered.

CCTV showed Flint, Johnson and Lloyd had gone to the shop the day before the burglary in what appeared to be a reconnaissance visit. Johnson and Lloyd then returned an hour and 20 minutes later and Lloyd tampered with the burglar alarm sensor.

Johnson and Flint, both aged 26, were arrested a few days later and questioned, before being released on bail while police continued their enquiries.

Then in the early hours of March 8, three men were seen in a 4×4 type vehicle arriving at the Co-Op in Nevendon Road, Wickford. They used the car to force open the rear doors of the building. Several attempts were made to break into a cash machine using a circular disc cutter, but they left empty-handed.

The following day, a stolen BMW was found in Wickford. The car contained items including a disc cutter, bolt croppers and a glove, which all were forensically linked to Johnson and Flint.

On 31st March shortly before 2.30am , three men arrived in a Ford Fiesta at William Hill bookmakers in Grange Parade, Billericay. Two smashed the door and left. The trio then returned at about 3.55am. One went into the shop briefly then left. Nothing was taken.

On April 4. At around 12.10am three men were seen outside Rightprice convenience store in North Street, Southminster. Two attempted to break open the door and returned about three hours later but drove off after the alarm sounded.

The Fiesta was stopped on the southbound A13 about two hours later. It was driven by Johnson, the sole occupant. He was wearing an Adidas jacket matching that worn by one of the men who broke into the Co-Op in Nevendon Road.

Lloyd was arrested later that day at his home in Oak Green, Billericay. In his bedroom were a Nike jacket and bag matching those worn by one of the men in some the crimes. Forensic examinations also linked him to the tampering of the alarm sensor at the first Co-Op burglary.

All three were charged in January this year with conspiracy to burgle, seven counts of burglary and one count of attempted burglary.
They stood trial at Basildon Crown Court on October 16.

Flint, of Queen Elizabeth Drive, Corringham, and Johnson of Littlebury Green Basildon pleaded guilty to the burglaries at the Co-Op in The Sorrells, Stanford-le-Hope, Co-Op Nevendon Road, Wickford and William Hill Bookmakers ,Grange Parade , Billericay.

Lloyd, 22, pleaded guilty to burglary at the Co-Op in The Sorrells, Stanford-le-Hope and Rightprice Store, North Street, Southminster.

They were sentenced Friday 20th October 2017. Flint was given a total of 5 years 8 months for burglary and six months for disqualified driving, to run concurrently, in relation to a separate incident. He was also disqualified from driving for 34 months, which will start upon his release. Johnson was given a total of 5 years and 8 months for burglary and two months for common assault, to run concurrently, in relation to a separate incident while Lloyd was sentenced to a total of 4 years 5 months for burglary and attempted burglary.

Four further offences are to remain on file.

Detective Chief Inspector Josie Hayes, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said after today’s hearing: “Flint, Johnson and Lloyd declined to answer questions during police interview and denied any involvement in these crimes.

“But ultimately the evidence against them was overwhelming and caught them out.”

Gledhill litter

THE LEADER of Thurrock Council has praised the work of his Trading Standards team after a trader in Grays Shopping Centre was fined for selling illegal fags.

Sarah Cambridge, trading as Chequers Fruit and Veg at 18b North Mall, Grays Shopping Centre, pleaded guilty to six offences of selling counterfeit cigarettes, possessing with the intent to supply counterfeit cigarettes and failure to display a notice with regards to underage sales.

Cambridge appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court on 18 September 2017 and was sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid work and pay costs of £1,000.

This investigation followed significant intelligence received by Thurrock Council Trading Standards about the illegal activity taking place.

The team worked in conjunction with Essex Police and Public Health who provided funding for extra resources for the team to undertake this investigation.

Cllr Rob Gledhill, Leader of the Council who is responsible for Trading Standards, said: “Counterfeit tobacco products are harmful and illegal – it is right that our Trading Standards team investigate and take action against them. Illicit tobacco can do serious harm to health and has been known to contain insects and asbestos along with other unpleasant ingredients like human faeces.

“Whilst those buying counterfeit cigarettes might think they have saved a bit of money – I have to ask at what cost? The money stays within criminal gangs across the globe, the purchaser is risking their health and the money lost in tax revenue is a cost to the whole nation.”

“Let this be a warning to anyone who thinks they can make money off the back of resident’s safety – we will pursue you with the full force of the law and bring you to justice.”

Members of the public who would like to report sales of illegal tobacco should call Citizens Advice Consumer Service, who will record the information and pass it on to Trading Standards. The number is 03454 04 05 06.

Cannabis haul found in house in Chadwell St Mary

Chadwell St

A HAUL of cannabis was recovered by officers after they executed a warrant at a house in Godman Road, Chadwell St Mary.

Officers from the West Operation Raptor team executed the warrant at the house today, Wednesday October 25 acting on information they received from the community.

Inside they found a cannabis factory with 272 of the Class B drug plants at various stages of growth.

The house also had a sophisticated set-up designed to enable the plants to grow including hydroponic lighting, large fans to keep the plants cool and help get rid of the tell-tale smell and it had also been rewired to bypass the electricity mains.

No-one has yet been arrested in connection with the warrant but enquiries continue.

Det Sgt Scott Fitzmaurice of the West Operation Raptor team said: “This was a significant set-up with a large number of plants at various stages of growth.

“We will not tolerate those who are intent on growing, supplying or dealing drugs in our county. We have taken a significant amount of cannabis off the street today and enquiries are underway to catch those responsible.

“If you are intent on being involved in the illegal drugs trade in Essex, you can count on the fact that it is only a matter of time before Operation Raptor knock on your door.”

Essex Police set up Operation Raptor teams in the North, South and West of the county to tackle drug and gang-related crime.

The warrant comes as Essex Police is stepping up its action against those involved in gang crime and the illegal drugs trade even further with the launch of Operation Essex.

Teams from across the force, including Operation Raptor, Operational Support Group (OSG), roads policing, public protection and community and local policing, are coming together to specifically target those involved in drug supply in Essex as well as the associated violent offences which often go hand in hand with the illegal substance trade.

Officers will use a variety of tactics and are continuing to work with partners to safeguard those vulnerable to exploitation by drug dealers and gangs.

Anyone with information about drug or gang-related crime in their community can contact Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police campaign for Thurrock residents to protect their homes from burglars this winter

Essex Police

ESSEX Police is asking people across the county to make their homes safer as the force publishes new figures showing burglary increases by 13% during winter.

The force launches its Secure. Protect. Prevent. campaign on Monday October 23 by publishing a range of crime prevention advice on social and the force website www.essex.police.uk. Surveys, videos and interactive imagery will prompt people to think about small steps they can take to better secure their homes and possessions. The campaign is timed to coincide with clocks going back at 2am on Sunday, October 29 and darker mornings and evenings quickly approaching.

On Saturday, October 28 the force begins door-to-door work in communities across Essex where officers, local authority partners and volunteers will approach residents to advise and encourage them to think about home security.

Chief Superintendent Ewen Wilson said: “This time of year is when people think about preparing their homes for colder, shorter days. We think nothing of getting central heating or roofs checked for winter and this year we’re asking people to carry out the same checks on their home security.

“Burglary increases as the days get shorter. We are working hard to investigate them and we are solving more burglaries than ever before, but we need help and the best way to prevent crime is to make sure it doesn’t happen in the first place.

“There are simple tips to deter burglars and I need people to carry out basic security checks on their homes and encourage others to do the same. This can be anything from locking doors and windows when out of the house or when going to bed, to putting lights on a timer to making it look like someone is always at home. Take a moment to look at your property from a burglar’s perspective…will they be able to easily get to the rear of your property? Have you lever locked your UPvc doors? Are windows left open? Are your car keys easy to reach through your letter box?

“All our tips can be found on www.essex.police.uk/secure and we would like as many people as possible to take a few minutes to check out our advice. Small steps really can make a big difference to your home security.”

Assistant Chief Constable Andy Prophet said: “Fewer than 1% of households in Essex are the victim of burglary each year but I’ve seen the emotional, physical and financial impact this crime has not only for victims but for neighbours and the wider community too.

“Our data shows that burglary is a complex picture in Essex. The tactics we use in places like Basildon are very different to those used in rural areas. Work that isn’t seen such as number plate recognition, gathering information about mobile phone use of suspects to place them at scenes, and covert tactics to develop intelligence are just as valuable if not more so than traditional methods.

“That is having an impact and we’ve seen not only a reduction in the volume of burglaries in areas like Basildon but also more perpetrators of these crimes being put before the courts.”

Statement from Essex Police

“We’re aware of plans for large groups of motorcyclists to be travelling through Essex to locations across London for an unauthorised bike meet during the Halloween period.

During previous events in London, there has been dangerous riding that has posed a risk to the safety of both riders and other members of the public, as well as anti-social behaviour and criminal damage.

Chief Inspector Nick Lee said: “This event has not been authorised and there is no guarantee that adequate safety arrangements are in place, so anyone taking part does so at their own risk.

“If you do decide to attend, please be mindful of your safety and that of members of the public who are not taking part.

“We will be looking to work with participants to make sure any disruption that may occur while they pass through Essex is kept to a minimum.

“We will take action against anyone who acts anti-socially, commits crime or rides in a way that puts others at risk.

“Any members of the public who witness such behaviour are asked to call 101.”
