ESSEX Police are appealing for information about an incident in Grays where a suspect posed as a officer while a distraction burglary took place.
At around 7pm yesterday (Saturday, January 13) a woman, aged in her 70s, was at home in Blackshots Lane when she received a knock at her door.
The victim opened the door and spoke to a suspect who posed as a police officer.
Whilst talking to him at the front door, the conservatory doors of her property were smashed and the fake officer took her into her kitchen to ‘protect her.’
Two other suspects managed to gain access to her home through the rear of the property and searched the property, leaving with a four figure sum of cash.
The suspect who claimed to be a police officer remained with the victim for over an hour as the burglary took place.
The three suspects involved have been described as white, had their faces covered and were wearing gloves.
PC Beth Finch, of Grays CID, said: “The victim was elderly and vulnerable and was tricked into believing that a police officer was protecting her as a live burglary was taking place.
However, he was in fact distracting her as two other suspects searched her home for over an hour, leaving with a substantial amount of her money.”
“I would urge anyone with information to contact Grays CID quoting incident number 988 of 13/01 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
