POLICE have arrested nine people following a joint operation that involved tackling crime and road safety on the A13 across Essex and London.
The operation with the Metropolitan Police Service saw five men and one woman arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or drink on Friday, October 20.
One of those arrested was a 51-year-old man from Welwyn Garden City who was driving a mini-bus on behalf of a hen party. He was stopped at the Moto Services in Lakeside at 12.55pm and later released under investigation.
Police also charged Jamie Playford, 37, of Childbridge Lane, Kemsing, with drink driving after police pulled over his Seat Ibiza at 1.15pm. He appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, October 21, where he pleaded guilty.
He was disqualified from driving for 26 months, ordered to complete a 12 month community order and 120 hours unpaid work, was fined £170 and will compete a 20 day rehabilitation activity requirement.
The others arrested were a 32-year-old man from Basildon, a 28-year-old man from Braintree and a 41-year-old woman from Grays. They were also released under investigation.
Matt Hine, Operational Tasking Supervisor at Essex Police, said: “The day was a huge success and was an excellent demonstration of cross boarder working to target travelling criminality and road safety.
“Using our roads while under the influence or for criminal purposes will not be tolerated and if found, you will be investigated and put before the courts.”
Other activities from the day included:
* Three men, aged 22, 27 and 30 from Worcester, were stopped in Romford Road, Aveley, at around 1.10pm and arrested on suspicion of theft following an incident in Evesham on Saturday, October 7. They were released under investigation.
* One Arctic lorry was stopped and seized after it was linked to large scale fly-tipping, the driver was found to be disqualified with the vehicle being on false plates
* Nine drivers were found to be driving while using a mobile phone, another nine had no licence or insurance and two drivers were not wearing seatbelts.
* Officers also found that one vehicle had an under inflated tyre and another was found to be in a dangerous condition. A further nine vehicles were seized.
