Second street drinking operation in Grays Town Centre
THURROCK Council has once again joined forces with Essex Police to tackle street drinking and waste problems in Grays Town Centre.
The second joint operation was held on Friday 28 July and saw people ‘causing a nuisance to the public and businesses in the area’ dealt with.
Two street drinkers had their alcohol seized and ordered not to return to the area for 48 hours, under the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) which covers Grays Town Centre.
15 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were issued for littering and enforcement officers visited 27 businesses to inspect their trade waste documents.
Notices were issued to 18 businesses given them a fortnight to produce evidence, and 15 businesses who had previously been warned were given fines totally £4,500.
In total, fines worth £5,700 were issued during the joint operation.
Cllr Aaron Watkins, Portfolio Holder for Environment, welcomed the action taken: “I want to send a clear message to those who are causing a nuisance to the public and businesses in the area – your selfish actions will not be tolerated.
“These joint operations – while important – are not all we are doing. In the 11 days before the operation, eight fines were issued to people breaching the PSPO.
“We have seen how fly-tipping can blight our borough and often hits the public purse. Businesses have been warned – get the right waste licenses in place or face a hefty fine.
“We will continue to use every power at our disposal to tackle anti-social behaviour and improve the environment.”
