BETWEEN Friday March 31 and Sunday April 2, officers from Essex Police’s Casualty Reduction Team took part in 72 hours of action, helping to catch hundreds of people flouting road laws.
Members of the team were deployed to Chelmsford, Basildon, Grays and Southend.
One person who was stopped and detained by officers was wanted by the Metropolitan Police in connection with a murder.
Those caught committing speeding offences totalled 672, there were 17 people who were stopped for not wearing a seatbelt and 12 were stopped for using a mobile phone while driving.
Six people were found to have no insurance, two were stopped for careless riding and eight people had no valid MOT for their vehicle.
There were also a number of people who were caught drug or drink driving.
Adam Pipe, Casualty Reduction Manager at Essex Police, said:
“This was an exceptional 72 hours of activity which really highlights the link between road safety and crime prevention.
“Operations such as this are crucial in stopping and bringing to justice those who use the roads to bring harm to our communities. These days of action were carried out with fantastic support from a team of special constables who made a number of the arrests.
“All our officers operate with outstanding commitment and professionalism, and every day we are on the roads, protecting the public from those who think they are above the law.
“If you break the law on Essex’s roads, we will catch you.”
