DECEMBER is naturally a busy month for most people, and it has been no exception for the team.
December has seen Operation Christmas presence in Lakeside, with PCSO Kelly Roberts taking the lead with 11 Active Citizen deployments during this period, assisting with a range of activities including high visibility reassurance patrols and deterring shoplifting.
December 1 saw Thurrock CPT and Immigration work in partnership on Operation Ice in South Ockendon, targeting modern-day slavery.
December 2 had another joint agency operation between Thurrock CPT and our partners at Thurrock council trading standards, we attended Grays high street and searched people and premises believed to be illegally selling tobacco in the area, leading to amounts of tobacco and cigarettes being seized.
Tilbury had its Christmas lights switched on in front of crowds on December 2, with our officers and members of Thurrock council joining in the festivities and assisting where needed.
On December 3rd the team worked alongside our partners at Thurrock councils licencing department on Operation Lynx, carrying out surprise visits to nine pubs across Thurrock with assistance from Police dog Handler Tony Mayo and Police dog Kate, actively searching for drugs. We successfully seized quantities of drugs, both class A and C, and drug paraphernalia.
We continued Operation Sacrifice on several days in December, with PS Nick Hampson securing an arrest on December 4, where an adult male admitted causing criminal damage to private land in South Ockendon and the quad bike he was riding was seized by PC Neil Brand.
PC Rob Watts was on a traffic operation on December 9 and seized a vehicle off of a driver with no valid insurance as well as issuing numerous tickets for offences, including driving whilst using a mobile phone, not wearing a seatbelt and no valid MOT.
Operation wagtail patrols were completed on various dates in December with officers patrolling the roads included in the Designated Public Protection Order (DPPO) surrounding Lakeside. 4 fixed penalty notices were issued, tickets issued for no insurance, illegally tinted windows, illegal number plates, excess speed, no current MOT and we also arrested for 1 drink drive, 1 for no insurance 1 and 4 for driving without a licence.
On December 15 PCSO’s Gary Woolford & Billy Page located a vehicle containing four males in Grays which had a strong smell of cannabis emanating from within, and a cannabis warning was given.
On December 21 Thurrock Community policing team and Thurrock council housing team joined resources to launch operation Byron. Police officers and housing officers teamed up and visited HMO (houses of multiple-occupancy) addresses across Thurrock, speaking to tenants and checking their living conditions, and ensuring that homes met health and safety requirements, with police searching for signs of criminality and modern day slavery. The operation was successful, seeing some good results from our joint agency approach.
While on this operation, PC Paul Glensman noticed a stolen motorbike being driven in Ockendon, and when the driver decamped he quickly caught and arrested the male for theft and possession of drugs.
PC Martin Hatfield was off duty on December 28 when he detained and arrested a shoplifter in Ockendon, and still managed to purchase the pint of milk he went in for.
Also on December 28 PC’s Rob Watts and Paul Glensman were on Operation Culture in Grays when they arrested a male for drunk and disorderly following a report that he was urinating on the window of a local newsagents.
Several patrols were completed throughout the month in Stanford le Hope under Operation Apache, with 24 stop searches completed, 2 males were taken home to parents with homemade catapult’s, alcohol seized was and advice given to 4 females placing themselves at risk. We also arrested 2 people for possession with intent to supply class B drugs and for drink driving.
As well as this the team have conducted the festively named Operation Mistletoe, our high visibility visits to licenced premises, deterring anti-social behaviour and actively searching for drugs and other criminal offences.
