REFORM Party MP James McMurdock has expressed deep concerns over the government’s recent decision to release 5,500 prisoners early, a move aimed at addressing the nation’s prison overcrowding crisis.
In a formal letter addressed to the newly appointed Minister of State for Prisons, Probation, and Reducing Reoffending, the Rt. Hon. James Timpson MP, Mr. McMurdock calls for urgent reconsideration of the policy, citing potential risks to public safety.

In the letter, Mr. McMurdock acknowledges the gravity of prison overcrowding but warns that the early release scheme, which came into effect this month, could undermine public confidence in the justice system. He highlights alarming reports suggesting that some prisoners are now serving as little as 20% of their sentences.
“This significant reduction in time served increases the likelihood of reoffending and poses a danger to our communities,” Mr. McMurdock stated. “Public safety should always be the government’s top priority.”
Furthermore, Mr. McMurdock calls for clarity on the future of the emergency powers that enabled this early release scheme. He questions whether there are plans to make these measures permanent through a parliamentary vote, urging transparency regarding the government’s long-term strategy for managing the justice system during times of crisis.
In his proposal to ease prison overcrowding, Mr. McMurdock advocates for a more robust approach to the deportation of foreign nationals serving sentences in UK prisons. It is estimated that approximately 10,000 foreign nationals are incarcerated in the UK. By accelerating their deportation, he argues, the government could alleviate pressure on the prison system without endangering public safety.
“I urge the government to prioritise the deportation of foreign criminals over releasing offenders early. This would reduce strain on our prisons while sending a strong message that our country will not tolerate those who break our laws,” McMurdock continued.
In conclusion, Mr. McMurdock emphasised the importance of protecting public safety and maintaining trust in the justice system.
