BETWEEN April and July, Speed Enforcement Officers used a Trucam device to detect speeding motorists at 107 locations across Essex as part of commitment to road safety and to tackle speeding motorists on motorways.
The sites were located at identified hotspots and focused on the strategic road network of fast roads such as A13, A12 and M25, but didn’t ignore the residential areas and more rural roads where speeding also takes place.
The Speed Enforcement Officers recorded a top speed of 106mph on a 70mph fast road and a motorist captured driving at 66mph in a residential area, more than twice the 30mph speed limit.
Samantha Wright, Road Crime and Safer Essex Roads Operational Co-ordinator, said: “Following the launch of the newly created role last year, our Speed Enforcement Officers work alongside our Roads Policing Unit, and they are dedicated to tackling road-related crime, and in particular speeding offences that present a risk to the wider community, road users and the driver themselves.
“They play an important role in carrying out enforcement of traffic offences as they have proved over the last three months.
“Their community engagement and liaison with road safety partners helps us to direct our policing activities to where they are needed most and to provide reassurance to the public in areas where speeding has been raised as a concern.”
The work of the Speed Enforcement Officers supports Vision Zero, our joint ambition to have zero road deaths by 2040 or sooner and we will continue this important work, partnering with the local authorities, the road safety partnership and with the help of our Community Speedwatch volunteers, to reduce the risks posed to all our road users and encourage and educate drivers to make better driving decisions.
