IN an effort to keep Essex’s roads and all our road users safe, Roads Policing Unit (RPU) officers have arrested 583 drivers in connection with drink or drug driving in the first three months of 2024.

Through a number of policing operations and proactive patrols across the county, officers identified drivers who were unfit to drive and breaking the law.

In total, they arrested 279 drink drivers and 229 drug drivers.

A further 75 drivers who failed to provide a specimen were also arrested.

Roads Policing Inspector James Freeman said: “Road safety is and always will be a priority for us, and we’re committed to doing all we can to keep our roads safe to reduce the number of killed and seriously injured collisions, some of which have alcohol as a contributing factor.

“That’s why we are supporting this month’s national road safety operation to highlight this issue, educate drivers and where necessary, enforce the law.

“While people continue to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, we’ll continue this important work each and every day.

“Responsible drivers know not to get behind the wheel after they’ve been drinking, and we want everyone to be a responsible driver.”

Road safety continues to be a force priority, and we will ensure every effort is made to reduce the number of fatalities on our roads because one death is one too many.

The work of the Roads Policing Unit supports Vision Zero – our ambition to have no roads deaths in Essex by 2040 or sooner.
