LAST week, in an effort to keep roads in Essex safe, our Roads Policing Unit made sixty arrests for drink and drug driving.
Over the past seven days, officers from our Roads Policing Unit (RPU) have been focussing on drink and drug driving as part of our #drinkdrivingtogetherwecanstopit campaign, to keep roads in Essex moving and keep everyone safe.

Between 5 and 11 December, 23 drink drive arrests were made with a further 37 arrests for drug driving. Eight people failed to provide a specimen.
In the previous fourteen-day period (21 November – 4 December) during the men’s World Cup and in the run up to Christmas, 29 drink drive arrests were made with a further 23 arrests for drug driving. Thirteen people failed to provide a specimen.
Each year, Essex Police deal with serious or fatal collisions where drink or drug driving is a contributory factor.
Our #drinkdrivingtogetherwecanstopit campaign asks the public to help us tackle the issue and support our campaign which aims to save lives by deterring people from drink and drug-driving.
We’re asking you help us to prevent, persuade and report drink drivers this Christmas.
Prevent someone from drink driving by planning how you’re getting home after a night out. Could someone be a designated driver? Could you get a taxi?
Persuade them not to drive. Could they stay with you? Could you ask them to give you their car keys?
If not, then, as a last resort, call us.
This year, anyone who is charged with drink or drug driving during December will be expedited through the court procedure, meaning that you could be charged to appear in court within 48 hours of your arrest and disqualified from driving.
