BRITISH Transport Police (BTP) officers are appealing for information after a cyclist was knocked to the ground by a vehicle jumping a level crossing in Purfleet.

Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, which took place on Friday, 23 August, to come forward.

PC Maria Wheele, the investigating officer, said: “The cyclist was approaching the level crossing on London Road, next to the station, around 12.20pm as the crossing lights began to flash.

“A silver vehicle, believed to be a Fiat Bravo, then followed closely behind and began to speed up in an attempt to beat the lowering barrier. The driver then clipped the side of the cyclist, knocking him to the floor, before continuing on.”

Officers are currently carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances, including reviewing CCTV from the area and speak to witnesses.

PC Wheele added: “The cyclist didn’t stop to leave his details, so we are still keen to speak to him and get his full account. I’d also urge anyone who saw the car leave the area, or has any further information, to get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting incident B5/LNA of 02/09/2013. Information can also be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
